Corralejas of Cotorra
There are a lot of festivals in Córdoba, but Corralejas are one of the most popular. This is one of our region celebration and passion.
The word Corraleja is not in the Spanish dictionary. This word is part of the Caribbean’s dialect. Its root yard and for people from the Caribbean means timber yard where people fight with bulls.
The Corralejas festivals are inheritance of Spain. But its origin is in Greek's Culture. The Greek has a God that was middle human - middle bull and they have a special ceremony to adore it.
The Main Character of the Corralejas Festival are the bull, los garrocheros (men who ride horses and spear the bull in Corralejas and the banderilleros (men who spear the bulls using banderillas) There are many towns in Córdoba that are famous for the way they celebrate their Corralejas. These towns are:
Ciénaga de Oro; (They celebrate this festival at King Saint Day in January 6th) Tierra Alta in the Up Sinú, Palo de Agua in the Down Sinú, Ayapel, Chinú, Cereté, Sampués, Cotorra, Sincé, Sucre, Betulia, Corozal, Colosó, Montelíbano and Sahagún mainly.
During The Corralejas people have good times. They listen to Papayeras (Papayeras are Typical Musical Groups that play some interesting musical instrument such us the trumpet, clarinet, drum, etc. People like to organize fandango which is a special party where they dance porros around the band or papayera group.
